YOUR Newborn Session: What to Expect
Congratulations on your new arrival! The first few weeks of your baby’s life are a blur of emotions, sleepless nights, and overwhelming love. It is a fleeting time, and your baby will grow and change so much over the next few months that a photo session capturing those tiny details is the best way to preserve this moment forever.
At Gitty Strauss Photography, located here in Lakewood, NJ, my goal is to make your newborn session as stress-free and memorable as the photos themselves. Serving families across Central New Jersey, I strive to create a warm environment where you can relax.
If you are preparing for your upcoming session or thinking about booking one, here is a guide on what to expect, how to prepare, and why you can leave the stress at the door.
When is the Best Time to Schedule?
I generally schedule sessions when the baby is between 1 to 2 and half weeks old. I find this the sweet spot for babies that are sleepy and moms that have enough energy to get out.
If your baby arrives a bit early or is very small (under 5 lbs), we will wait until they are 2 to 3 weeks old to ensure they are settled and filled out a bit more.
Is it too late if my baby is older?
Not at all! I have photographed many "older" newborns with stunning results. The session flow might be a little different, and we may get more wide-eyed awake shots than sleepy curled-up poses, but the photos will be just as beautiful.
What time will the session begin?
Newborn sessions are usually scheduled in the morning, with a start time between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM. This is typically when babies are most settled.
Running Late? I completely understand what it is like to be a new mom trying to get out of the house. If things aren't going to plan and you are running behind, that is totally fine. Just keep me posted via text the morning of the session so I know when to expect you.
How Long Does the Session Take?
Sessions typically last anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours. That's because we work entirely on the baby’s schedule. If the baby needs to eat, be changed, or just needs time to settle down, we take the time to do it. We never rush the process.
A Little Prep Goes a Long Way
Try to feed the baby right before you leave your house or just before your scheduled start time. A full tummy equals a happy, sleepy baby!
What Should You Bring?
You do not need to worry about outfits or props. My studio is fully stocked with a beautiful selection of blankets and wraps, bonnets, hats, headbands, toys and props.
I try to keep your packing list as short as possible, but there are a few essentials that help the session run smoothly:
Pacifier: Even if you aren't using one at home, it is incredibly helpful for soothing the baby during transitions between poses.
Feeding Supplies: Please bring a bottle. Even if it is not "feeding time" babies often need a little snack to settle down.
Diaper Bag Essentials: Plenty of diapers, wipes, and a burp cloth.
Sentimental Items (Optional): If you have a family heirloom, a specific pretty blanket or headband, or a special toy you want included, feel free to bring it along!
The Studio Experience: Sit Back and Relax
My Lakewood, NJ studio is designed to be comfortable and relaxed for new parents. I know you are likely recovering and running on very little sleep. When you arrive, consider this your break. The studio is warm and relaxed. I invite you to sit on our comfortable chairs, drink a coffee, eat a snack, and take a breath while I take care of your baby. You don’t need to hover or stress; your little one is in safe, experienced hands.
Styling Your Session
I want these photos to reflect your style. If you have a specific color palette, a pose you’ve seen on Instagram, or a "look" you love, please send me sample pictures before the session. This helps me get a feel for your preferences so I can set up the perfect scenes for you.
I look forward to meeting you and your beautiful new baby. If you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to reach out.
